The Night
Before Christmas
by Clement Clarke Moore / Teodora Sirko |
Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote the
poem “Twas the night before Christmas”, also called
“A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1822 for his children,
on Christmas Eve. It was first published in 1823 and it was
an immediate success, but Clement Clarke Moore only claimed
ownership in 1844 when the poem was included in a book of his
poetry. Reading “Twas the night before Christmas”
poem on Christmas Eve is now a tradition all over the world.
The image of Santa Clause as a jolly old elf who flies in a
miniature sleigh with eight tiny reindeer (Dasher, Dancer, Prancer,
Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen), enters the houses
through the chimneys and brings toys to children, comes from
Moore’s famous description of St. Nick. „The Night
Before Christmas” is the most enduring and memorable Christmas
poem.
